The rectangular mother-of-pearl inlay dial depicting a bird on a branch within a lacquer bezel with Arabic chapters to the lacquer case with geometric detail surmounted by a mother-of-pearl panel with a freshwater pearl bird perched on top, jadeite and black onyx base, circa 1925, 9.5 x 7.2 x 4.0 cm. (lacquer in bezel with small chip)

Lot Essay

The mother-of-pearl inlay dial on this clock is signed M for Vladimir Makovsky (1884-1966). Most inlay of this type with untouched and tinted mother-of-pearl as well as hardstone made during the Art Deco period is generally attributed to him. A Russian based in Paris, he worked for many of the well-known jewellers of the time such as Cartier and Ostertag
