Lot Essay

With its characteristic `sunburst' marquetry, waved apron and restrained ormolu mounts, this elegant serpentine commode typifies the Neapolitan Louis XV style of the mid 18th Century. Similar examples are illustrated in A. Murano, Il Mobile Napoletano del Settecento, Naples, 1977, Ill. XXI (b) and in E. Basseschi, Mobili Italiani del Meridioni, Milan, 1966, pp. 81 and 84.

A related pair of commodes, with similar hoof sabots, was sold from the property of the late Countess of Brecknock, Wherwell Priory, Sotheby's House sale, 2 may 1990, lot 309. A further related example was sold from the property of the late Sir Philip Shelbourne, Myles Place, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Christie's House Sale, 25-26 October 1993, lot 7.
