Lot Essay

Max Silbert was born in Odessa but received his artistic education in Paris, where he was a pupil of J.L. Gérome. From Paris, he travelled to Flanders and Zeeland, where he stayed in 1907 and 1908. Another painting from 1907 which also depicts the village of Zoutelande was offered at Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 December 1987, lot 300.
