Lot Essay

The Leyden born artist was one of the founders of the Saint Lucas Guild in 1648. Though he is recorded as having painted portraits, he is chiefly known for his marines, which are characterized by greyish, stormy seas, often with fishing boats or with fishermen in the foreground. The present lot shows the cotton-wool like rendering of the waves, as described by L.J. Bol, Die Holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, 1973, p.113, which are so typical of his style.
