Lot Essay

Although never proven, this design has often been attributed to Cornelis Pronk for stylistic reasons. The central palmette, for example, can be found on the well of the 'Arbour' pattern plates as well as its trellis pattern background.
In C.J.A. Jörg, Pronk Porcelain, 1980, p.39, no.15, the author argues that this design was likely to have been ordered privately as only a few and small, easily transportable amount was made.
It is possible that the technically difficult colour scheme also accounts for the small group of recorded pieces. Together, the known examples would add up to a large tea-service. Cf. For a 'Palmette' design see Howard and Ayers, China for the West, p.302, pl.296.
