GEORG WOLFGANG KNORR (1705-1761)

Thesaurus Rei Herbariae Hortensisque universalis... Allgemeines Blumen- Krauter- Fruchte-und Garten-Buch. Nuremberg: Paul Jonathan Felssecker for the heirs of G.W.Knorr, [1750]-1770-[1772]. 2 volumes bound in three, 2° (395 x 250mm). One letterpress title in Latin and German, parallel text in Latin and German. Two hand-coloured engraved titles, 301 fine hand-coloured engraved plates, on 300 leaves, extra-illustrated with other states of plates P and P4 in the third volume (bound as F [bis] and F4), and plates numbered I-IX, all by Knorr but from another work, bound at the front of the plates in the third volume. (Without letterpress title to volume II, neatly repaired tears to both engraved titles, neat marginal repairs to seven plates, the final plate in the third volume with neatly repaired hole affecting the plate area but not the image.) Contemporary marbled calf gilt, covers with triple fillet borders enclosing cornerpieces of elaborate fleur-de-lys tool, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-pieces in two, the others with repeat pattern of the fleur-de-lys tool surrounded by various small tools (corners and head and foot of spine neatly repaired, the first two volumes with joints and inner hinges neatly repaired, the third volume with neat repairs to parts of the joints). Provenance: unidentified noble monogram (ink stamps on titles of two volumes).

"OHNE ZWEIFEL DAS LIEBLICHSTE DER DEUTSCHEN BLUMENBCHER" (Nissen). Although this magnificent work was undoubtedly conceived by Knorr (he drew and engraved all the plates), he died in 1761 and the remaining text was prepared by P.F.Gmelin and G.R.Bohmer. It has now been demonstrated that Knorr drew on a number of printed sources for the design of his plates, most noticeably Georg Dionysius Ehret's work for Trew's Plantae selectae and Weinmann's Phytanthoza. Dunthorne 214; Great Flower Books p.62; Hunt 538; Nissen BBI 1081 and Supplement p.43; Pritzel 4757; Satfleu & Cowan 3770. (3)
