Histoire naturelle et raisonnée des différens oiseaux qui habitent le globe. Paris: L.C.Desnos, 1773-1774. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (510 x 338mm). 85 engraved plates, 23 in part I by Nicolas Robert. (Some browning and spotting, some light marginal dampstaining.) Modern old-style-calf-backed boards, red morocco lettering-piece on spine (very light scuffing to extremities).
THIS FRENCH EDITION IS VERY RARE AT AUCTION. According to the title the work is intended as a companion volume to Merian's "l'Histoire des Insectes & Plantes". It was also issued under the title Collection d'oiseaux les plus rares.. (Paris: Desnos, 1772-1774). The first part contains a reissue of most of the plates from two of Robert's work on the birds in the royal menagerie at Versailles (Receuil...; and Suite des Oyseaux le plus rares, both originally published in Paris in 1676). Volume II contains contemporary engravings. Cf.Anker 238; Nissen IVB 484; Ronsil 1503; Wood p.410.
