Decorated overall with rectangular and shaped pietra dura panels showing floral, animal and shell motifs and ornamental patterns, the upper section with a galleried pediment and canted front angles, the central door flanked by a pair of lapis lazuli-veneered columns with Corinthian capitals, fitted to the interior with seven burr walnut veneered drawers, the left side door fitted to the interior with three shelves, the right side door fitted to the interior with one upright division, above three drawers, on bun feet; the lower section with a frieze secretaire, with a hinged front and leather-lined writing surface on breccia di sciro-inlaid block-headed square tapering legs joined by an 'H'-stretcher, on turned feet

Lot Essay

An almost identical cabinet-on-stand, manufactured in Florence between 1860-1870, is illustrated in S. Chiarugi, Botteghe di Mobilieri in Tosacana, Florence 1994, p. 293. A closely related cabinet-on-stand was sold Christie's, Melbourne, 16 November 1992, lot 252. Another, offered Sotheby's, London, 20 June 1985, lot 343, bore the label of the Florentine manufacturers Giovanni Ugolini & Co, who exhibited at the 1870 London Exhibition.
