Lot Essay

During 1960 Frost had his first one-man exhibition in New York at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery where the present work was included. He met a number of artists including Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell. Clement Greenburg visited Frost's show and was particularly freindly. The warm reception for this and for a second exhibition at the same gallery two years later gave added elation and conviction to his own direction and his painting shows new simplification of form and exuberant colour. (see T. Cross, Painting the Warmth of the Sun; St. Ives Artists 1939-1975, Penzance, 1984, p.144).
