Lot Essay

The watercolours executed by Williams on his extended tour of Italy and Greece, which finished in 1818, were instrumental in establishing his reputation. An exhibition of the work documenting his journey was held in 1822.
The National Gallery of Scotland has a two volume set of artist's proofs for Hugh William 'Grecian' William's Select Views in Greece with Classical Illustrations, including the print from the present watercolour (cat. no. P. 148).
