Lot Essay
William Callow exhibited a finished watercolour of Torquay looking over Torbay in 1843, which was later sold from the collection of David Rolt at Christie's London, 16 July 1974, lot 146 (850 gns. to Marc). A similar view dated 'Sept. 24.43', is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
Although the exhibition watercolour was completed in 1843, Jan Reynolds concludes that the date on the Walker Gallery watercolour was probably added by Callow in error and she believes that Callow was in Torquay the previous year. In September 1843 Callow was in fact on his way from Durham to London. The present watercolour is therefore likely to have been executed 1842.
