Lot Essay
Scott's view of the north bank of the Thames looking downstream towards the York Buildings Water Tower, depicts a panorama of the mid 18th Century houses occcupied by the Dukes of Richmond and Montagu, Mr Joshua Smith, the Duke of Portland, Mr Andrew Stone and the Earl of Pembroke.
Four similar versions of this composition are recorded in R. Kingzett, A Catalogue of the Works of Samuel Scott, Walpole Society XLVIII, 1982, pp. 52-54., three of which are in private collections. The fourth, which was formerly at Northwick Park, was sold in these Rooms, 25 June 1965, lot 85 (sold 9,000 gns.) and is now in The Guildhall Art Gallery, London.
Fanny Jane Jelf-Reveley was the wife of the descendant of Andrew Jelfe, the mason and contractor who commissioned a version of Scott's The York Buildings Water Tower (R. Kingzett, op. cit., p. 55, version C).
