Lot Essay

George Ward (1751-1829) of Northwood Park, Cowes, Isle of Wight married Mary Woodfall in 1784, the year in which this miniature was painted. He was a large landowner and a merchant of considerable importance in the City of London. His son was a famous cricketer, William Ward who in 1825 purchased the lease of Lord's Cricket Ground.
