Lot Essay

These chairs have pierced claw feet, an extremely rare feature, usually seen on American furniture. Interestingly, there are another pair of chairs in this sale, which also have pierced claw feet (lot 101). They are possibly Irish.
A set of six George II 'red walnut' chairs with pierced claw feet, and formerly in the collection of the late Dame Violet Wills, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 4 May 1991, lot 51.
