AN IRISH GEORGE II MAHOGANY CARD-TABLE
The rounded eared rectangular hinged top enclosing four oval counter-wells, four circular candle-stands and a green baize-lined playing-surface, the shaped frieze centred by a scallop shell flanked by a pair of flowerheads, the left-hand side with a drawer, on cabriole legs with carved acanthus knees and squared lion-paw feet, inscribed in chalk to the underside '804', restorations, the side drawer possibly later

Provenance

Brought over from Ireland by the present owner's mother, circa 1950.

Lot Essay

This elegant card-table had many Irish features, including the waved rosette-enriched apron centred by a shell, the long partial-scrolls at the top of the legs, and the squared lion-paw foot. In addition, it has a collar, just below the bulging muscle or 'hock' at the bottom of the leg.
