The lozenged frames, conceived in the late 18th Century Egyptian manner and formed like mirrored obelisks tipped with lotus-flowered 'Osiris' sun-discs, frame an elephant-head, such as feature on Roman marble candelabra illustrated in G.B. Piranesi's, Vasi, candelabri, cippi.. Rome, 1769. Related sconces, sold anonymously, A.P. Tajan Paris, 17 March 1975, lot 17, each had a single scroce supported by an 'Anubis' jackel-head.
