Marie-Pauline Laurent (née Jullien) working period 1838-1860.

This plaque is based on the portrait of a lady, believed to have been Titian's mistress, now in the Louvre, which originally belonged to the Gonzagas of Mantua, before passing into the collections of Charles I and Louis XIV (see L'opera completa di Tiziano, Milano, 1969, fig.52, Tav.XI).

There is a similar, larger plaque (92 cm. x 84 cm.) in the Sèvres Museum, painted by Beranger in 1834.

For a discussion of the painted plaques of this period, see The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, 1800-1847, Exhibition Catalogue (New York, 1997), p.89.
