Manuscript on buff paper, 344ff. with 12ll. of strong black naskh within gold rules, gold roundels between verses, sura headings in gold, red Persian interlinear translation, two finely illuminated opening bifolios with gold and polychrome spiralling arabesques, extensive black shikasteh commentary in margins, penultimate folio with colophon signed Abdullah al-Yazdi and dated 1109, shikasteh commentary signed Muhammad Hadi b. Muhammad Amin Shirazi and dated 1109, final folio with dedication to the unnamed Sultan, generally clean condition, some folios loose, in black morocco binding with red velvet overlay, one board loose

Lot Essay

A note on the flyleaf by Muhammad Shahdad Talpur b. Amir Nur Muhammad Khan b. Amir Murad records how he acquired this Qur'an. It had belonged to his grandfather, who left it to his uncle. The British confiscated the Qur'an during a period of political instability in Sind, but he was able to buy it back from them in Calcutta.
