A SINGHALESE IVORY VENEERED HARDWOOD CHEST
CEYLON, 17TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form with hinged doors opening to reveal graduated drawers, originally on four feet, the entire surface veneered with ivory panels carved in low relief, the doors each with a central panel depicting a date-palm with a person shinning up to get the fruit, two animals below, the sides with fruiting trees and monkeys, paired elephants below, the reverse and the interior of the doors with similar scenes, the top with an extraordinary variety of various genre scenes using a variety of orientations, all within elaborate borders of scrolling palmette and rosette vine, the fronts of each drawer with a procession of various animals divided by various trees, engraved brass mounts, slight damages, small old restorations
