Lot Essay

Although no cheval mirrors are mentioned in the Memorandum or the surviving bill, this cheval mirror matches several known to be by the firm and the attribution is almost certain. It is another piece of evidence to suggest that there was a further, now unrecorded Gillow commission, in or soon after 1813, to supplement the furniture delivered that summer.
This cheval mirror matches three supplied by Gillow in 1811 and 1812 to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire. The latter were described as 'Handsome Cheval Dressing Glass in Mahogany frame, with turned reeded stiles and a pair of brass Candle branches; on reed claws and brass sockett Castors, plate 34 x 22 ...12½ guineas, (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pls. 17b and pp. 28, 30 and 32).
