Lot Essay

The present drawings are traditionally thought to be designs for the park at Hackwood. The garden has survived as one of the most complete formal landscapes in Britain.
James Gibbs (1682-1754) first worked on designs for ornamental buildings and temples for the Park and was employed by the 3rd Duke of Bolton before 1720.
