Lot Essay

The prototype model of this liqueur set was first exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878. Baccart continued to manufacture this until the early 1900s.
The concept for this crystal centrepiece is based on the original temple which Baccart exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1878. The Greek Temple, centred with a silvered bronze figure of Mercury, was praised by the commentators for its technical brilliance, but Baccarat were disappointed by their lack of enthusiasm in their report, and as such declined to participate at future exhibitions. However they did capitulate and exhibited again in 1909 (see Jean-Louis Curtis, Baccarat, London 1992, page 57-59).
