Manuscript chart of Clayoquot [Kyuguot] Sound, north of Nootka on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, ink on paper, 410 x 520mm, scale in nautical miles, north arrow, the chart delicately drawn showing the coastlines, sandbanks, depths, sandbanks and obstructions, islands and headlands, names, numbered 7, the chart set within a black-rule border. (Old fold marks). Mounted.

A fine chart, probably drawn up from Quimper's notes on his return to Spain. Manuel Quimper was part of Francesco de Eliza's expedition in 1790-91 sent to occupy Nootka Sound for Spain. Quimper was sent to reconnoitre the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Wagner, Northwest Coast pp. 221-222 notes Quimper "spent entirely too much time in Clayoguot Sound, his visit to the interior of the strait was a rather hurried one." Quimper however made a number of important discoveries including Port Discovery on the Olympia Peninsula, Washington State. Wagner notes 8 charts prepared during Quimper's expedition, but does not include this chart or any other of Clayoquot Sound.
