First initial in gold on red ground, 4- to 10-line initials in interlocking red and blue, 2-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue, 18th-century painted border to first page of each volume with flowers, palm leaves and birds on a blue ground, MS guide-letters, occasional contemporary quiring visible. (Small wormholes in first few quires and short wormtrack in last 2 quires touching some letters, occasional light stain or spotting, one neat tear.) Late 17th- or early 18th-century French red morocco bound for Henri-Louis, Comte de Loménie de Brienne, with his arms [Olivier 1077, fer 4] on sides, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endleaves, edges marbled and gilt (short split at front hinge of volume I). Provenance: Henri-Louis or André-Louis, Comte de Loménie de Brienne (1658-1743, binding, sale London 28 April 1724).
