CICERO, Marcus Tullius (106-43 B.C.). Orationes. Edited by Ludovicus Carbo. Venice: Nicolaus Girardengus, 10 March 1480.
Chancery 2° (286 x 207mm). 285 leaves (collation varies from GW and BMC with quire x10 in two quires, x6 and 2x4). Roman type 1:115, some Greek type, 38-39 lines, printed guide-letters. 5- to 7-line initials alternating in red or blue. (Small perforations in first 2 leaves, occasional very light browning, worming in final quire.)
BINDING: contemporary North Italian russet goatskin over wooden boards bevelled at inner edge, panelled in blind with a border of small hatched tool and curved tool repeated to form a plaited effect, the central panel filled with small crosses, the spine compartments diapered with triple fillets, circular punches in the lozenges, 5 brass bosses to each cover (2 missing), 3 clasps (the clasps gone, tiny section at spine foot worn, a few scuffs). VECELLIO FORE-EDGE PAINTING: a Renaissance man wearing an ermine-collared red robe declaims, watched over by Cicero above in classical garb, seated in front of drapery, the author's name and title abbreviated and lettered horizontally. Top and bottom edges pale orange marbled in grey.
