PRIMALEON -- Los tres libros del muy efforcado cavellero Primaleon et Polendos su hermano hijos del Emperador Palmerin de Oliva. Venice: Giovanni Antonio de' Nicolini da Sabbio for Giovanni Baptista Pederzano, 1534.
3 parts in one volume, 2° (311 x 209mm). Title to each part printed in red and black, large woodcut on each title, the first a scene with Primaleon and Duardes on horseback and the giant Gataru, the second title cut repeated on the third title, 126 smaller woodcuts (58x73mm) from 32 blocks, woodcut historiated and white-vine initials. (Tiny wormhole at inner margin of several quires, small corner section of final leaves expertly renewed.) 19th-century English gold-tooled tan morocco, wide gilt fillet border with roundel at corners, Utterson device at centre of both covers, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, by Charles Lewis for E.V. Utterson (joints rubbed, short split at front joint). Provenance: Payne & Foss 1821 (booksellers, later ascription on flyleaf); E.V. Utterson (binding, purchase and binding note on flyleaf); Sir Thomas Phillipps (sale Sotheby's, 26 November 1946, lot 267, £250 to Girondo).
Fifth edition of this popular chivalric romance. It continued the story of Palmerin de Oliva and went through about 10 editions in Spanish in the 16th century; all early editions are rare. The smaller cuts belong to a set copied by Nicolini da Sabbio from Seville editions of Spanish romances printed by the Crombergers. Nicolini da Sabbio had used them previously in his edition of Amadis de Gaula in 1533 (cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian 19). Brunet IV, 874-5; Palau 237213 ('bella y estimada edición'); Sander 5878.
