CHURCHILL, Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Two typewritten letters signed ('Winston S. Churchill' and 'W') to Dorothy Allhusen, Chartwell, 5 and 18 July 1948, the first with autograph salutation and subscription, the second with 6 words and the subscription in autograph, together 2 pages, 4to (punch holes in upper left corners).
Both letters refer to Mrs Allhusen's 'historic gift' to Churchill of 'the marble paper weight which once belonged to Lord Beaconsfield', which he accepts with pleasure, writing on July 18 that he will always cherish it and 'I keep it on my table'. At Chartwell Churchill worked for many years at an upright desk which had belonged to Disraeli.
Dorothy Allhusen (1877-1965), was the daughter of Lady Jeune by her first marriage to John Stanley, and her husband, Henry Allhusen (d.1925) was for some years a Member of Parliament. (2)
