Lot Essay

This chest with its protruding moulded top, fluted pilasters terminating in a square base, its large moulded plinth base and generous ogee feet, relates to a desk belonging to the Trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum, signed in pencil, 'David Wright Fecit Lancaster 19th August 1751' (Susan E. Stuart, 'Prices for workmen in Lancaster, The earliest surviving cabinet-makers' price list' Regional Furniture, 1988, p. 21, fig. 1.)
A similar chest,but with mahogany flame-veneered front and oval plate handles, was sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 29 November 1995, lot 210.
