Lot Essay

A sketch for this 'low wardrobe' pattern features in Gillows of London and Lancaster's 1808 Estimate Book (Westminster Library P.1842). This wardrobe also corresponds to two supplied by Gillow for Tatton Park, Cheshire in 1811 (see N. Goodison and J Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pls. 11a and 10a). The names 'Parkes', may be that of the journeyman John Parkes, who was employed by Gillows.
