A RARE LARGE SICHUAN POTTERY MYTHICAL BEAST

Powerfully modelled in a striding pose raising one large clawed paw, the head slightly tilted upwards with jaws wide apart revealing the beast's teeth and tongue, the arched eyes beneath heavy curling eyebrows, the wings to the forequarters and haunches finely modelled, the back supporting a circular column applied with florets, some restoration

Similar models of mythical beasts from the Eastern Zhou dynasty are illustrated, Mysteries of Ancient China, Catalogue no.61. Another related bronze example is illustrated in the same catalogue, fig.2, p.156.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd thermoluminescence test no. C97r89 is consistant with the dating of the lot.
