Lot Essay

This model was probably inspired by jade carvings of recumbent elephants of the late Tang or Song Dynasties. See an example of this early form from the collection of Dr. Arthur Sackler, which was exhibited Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society, 1975, Catalogue no.205.
