Lot Essay

The arms are those of the Order of Saint Augustine of Macao, which was founded in 1589. See N. de Castro, op.cit., 1988, p.29 for a vase bearing these arms which is in the Guilherme Alpoim Calvão, Cascais, and is also illustrated Oceanos, Porcelanas e Mares da China, no.14, June 1993, p.47. A hexagonal vase with these arms is in a private collection in Mexico City and is illustrated by J. McClure Mudge, op.cit., 1986, pls. 49 and 50, p.47. Another vase is in The National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon.
