A PAIR OF LATE LOUIS XVI BEECH SIDE CHAIRS

Each with an oval padded back and bow-fronted seat covered in floral needlework with a basket of flowers in a twisted ribbon and floral garlanded border, on a grey ground, the back with an oval channelled frame with twisted-ribbon border centred at the top by ribbon-tied foliage, the seat-rail with carved guilloche-band, on ring-turned tapering stop-fluted legs headed by patera-centred rectangular panels, on toupie feet, each chair stamped 'G.JACOB', one chair inscribed in pencil '3576', the other inscribed in pencil '6782' (2)

Two closely related chaises à la reine in the Louvre, one by Georges Jacob, the other stamped by Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard, are illustrated in G. Janneau, Les Sièges, Paris 1967, p.135, fig.252, whilst a fauteuil with similar decoration is illustrated in Madeleine Jarry, Le Siège Franais, Fribourg, 1973, p.197, ill. 188.
