Lot Essay
This ormolu-enriched clock is surmounted by the cloud-borne Venus embracing Hymen at Love's altar. Its statuary marble plinth displays Etruscan pearl-wreathed tablets of flowered wave-scrolls framing a festive bas-relief of music-making putti in the manner of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (d. 1843), and this latter features on a mantel clock sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 13 June 1997, lot 63. Such biscuit figures in the manner of Falconet were executed at the Parisian manufactory established by the duc d'Angoulême in the rue Bondy in 1789 under the direction of Guerhard and Dihl, and this was extensively patronised by the Garde-Meuble.
