A very fine view of the Castel Sant' Angelo. Italian fortification theory and practice was particularly advanced at this time, and was to have great influence on Dutch town building and town fortifications. Paul IV, Gian Pierto Carafa, pursued harsh policies in his attempt to combat the spread of Protestantism. He eradicated virtually all traces of Protestantism in Italy, but his period in office was dominated by his disastorous opposition to Spain, his conflict with the Colonna family, his impolitic declaration of war against the Habsburgs, his failure to stop the secession of England, and the particulour rigour with which the Inquistion was carried out. His troubled pontificate can be seen in the substantial rebuilding program which transformed the Castel Sant' Angelo into a considerable and strategically important modern fortress. Not in Tooley.
