BONIFACIO, Natale (1538-1592). Abruzzo Ulteriore. Rome: Nicholaes van Aeslt, 15 October 1587.

Engraved bird's-eye map of the region of Abruzzi on a single Royal sheet, 410 x 550 (engraving 358 x 502mm). Arms of Spanish Royal family, dedication cartouche surmounted by the arms of Frederico Cesi, scalebar with dividers, compass rose. (Some light spotting to margins).

A VERY RARE map of the Abruzzi. It has wealth of detail presented in an accurate manner, in particular river systems and cities. Natale Bonifacio, a skilful Dalmatian engraver from Sebenico, was active in Rome until the end of the 16th century, and worked with Domenico Fontana amongst others. Although Bonifacio was certainly inspired by Egnazio Dante's fresco map of Abruzzi in the Galleria Vatican, the orientation of his map of the region and his depiction of mountains was his own. According to Lago, Bonifacio expresses a mature "pictorial sensibility in rendering the complex morphology of the region". Almagià considers this map "very rare"; copies of it are in Biblioteca Vaticana and in British Library map room; Tooley 94, RECORDING ONLY ONE OTHER COPY; watermark Woodward 54.
