ANONYMOUS. Vero ritratto dela citta de Bologna. Rome: Giovanni Orlandi, 1602.

Engraved bird's-eye view of Bologna on a single Royal sheet 410 x 545mm (382 x 470mm). The title with the arms of Bologna, lower part with legend and subtitle. (Some light dampstiaining and discolouration, worming affecting image in two places only.)

A fine plan of Bologna. Giovanni Orlandi was one of the heirs of Claudio Duchetti was the nephew and one of the heirs of Antonio Lafreri. The imprints states the latter relationship, 'nepote Ant. Lafreri' and adds the date, 1582. The plan shows the town within its medieval walls and details some of Bologna's most famous monuments: the church of San Petronio with its unfinished facade, the Piazza Maggiore with its Palazzo, the Fountain of Neptune, the towers of Asinelli and Garisenda. This is a fine Orlandi reissue of an extremely rare Duchetti map (Tooley 139, recording only two other copies). Few 16th century maps survive of Bologna, and Tooley only sites the Duchetti map of which this is a restrike. Watermark six-pointed star with a hub in a circle (similar to Woodward 148 but without the cross).
