[HAZLITT, William] Literary Remains of the late William Hazlitt. With a notice of his life by his son, and thoughts on his genius and writings by E. L. Bulwer and Sergeant Talfourd, London: Saunders and Otley, 1836, 2 volumes, 8°, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO LEIGH HUNT, front endpaper inscribed "Leigh Hunt Esq. With the best respects of the author's son", engraved portrait frontispiece stippled by Marr after Bewick (spotting), original boards (very worn, blocks split). [Keynes 102]
Provenance
LEIGH HUNT'S COPY, with his autograph signature on title and some annotations, notably vol. I pp. 187, 196 and rear endpaper, and vol. II pp. 12, 26, 81, 89, 152. Later ownership inscriptions of John Wason Dalby and Michael Foot. With a loosely inserted typed copy letter, dated January 4, 1947, to Michael Foot, New York, from Payson G. Gates, stating: "This is really an extraordinary book. I shall call it the Editor's copy. Hazlitt, Jr. edited the book. He gave it to Leigh hunt, another editor. Then it went to J. Watson Dalby, on Leigh Hunt's death, I suspect ... Then, after a period of years, the book came into the possession of P. P. Howe, author, editor, collector; next to Michael Foot of this generation of editors, and finally -- by reason of his generous propensities -- into the hands of perhaps the only non-professional owner of the book in its 110 years history."
