Lot Essay

A copy of the portrait of the same size and dated, but signed with a monogram, in the Royal Collection and now at Buckingham Palace. That version was stated to have been painted for Queen Victoria, and is inscribed on the back as a portrait of the Princess in her wedding dress. The Princess was married at Windsor Castle on 21 March 1871. The likeness is based closely on a photograph by Hills and Saunders.
Princess Louise (1848-1939) was the sixth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married John Campbell (1845-1914), Marquess of Lorne, and later 9th Duke of Argyll. They had no children.
