Jean de Léry's voyage to Brasil took place in 1557. A Protestant minister, Léry published this account in 1578 following his return to France and the failure of his mission to establish a colony of Huguenots. Sabin states that the Latin version, first issued in 1586, "is, in reality, more valuable than the original, as it contains passages that were suppressed in the French." It is noted for containing one of the earliest descriptions of the ritual ceremonies performed on crossing the equator.
