Lot Essay

John "Warwick" Smith (1749-1831), watercolourist, was sent to Italy in 1776 by the 2nd Earl of Warwick, previously George, Lord Grenville, his stay lasting for 5 years. His Select Views, published in London between 1792 and 1799, includes depictions of Bologna, Florence, Perugia, Assisi, Genoa, Paestum and Loreto.
