A PAIR OF ETRUSCAN BAULE TYPE EARRINGS
LATE 6TH-EARLY 5TH CENTURY B.C.
each cylinder open at one end and surmounted by a semi-circular ornamental plate, the front of the cylinder is decorated with nine bosses (in three rows of three), five granulated and four with floral shapes and granulated centres, each boss contained in its own square compartment formed by intersecting lines of double loops; the back of the cylinder is decorated with vertical line of double spirals between beaded wires, and another vertical beaded line on either side, a horizontal band of impressed tongue pattern bounding these lines above and below. The hinge on silver pins is masked by a semi-circular gold plate decorated with female mask in relief framed by two lines of double spirals between which are seven hollow hemispherical cups containing granulated bosses, two smaller similar cups intersecting each of the larger ones. The closed end of the cylinder has a circular plate decorated with concentric circles of globules and granulation with a palmette in filigree above, the outer edge ornamented with twisted wires imitating plaits, as with the open end of the earring and the outer edge of the semi-circular plate above
