Edward Robert Hughes studied at the Royal Academy schools with the Pre-Raphaelite painters, Holman Hunt and his uncle Arthur Hughes. In later years he often worked as a studio assistant for Hunt, and his style was greatly influenced by the artist as a result. He is best known for painting literary themes of a symbolist nature and portraits. He exhibited regularly at the RWS and at the RA between 1870 and 1911.
