Lot Essay

A widely travelled individual, Frank Dean's vibrant representations of the Middle East and India attest to his artistic versatility as his works also number traditional English landscapes. A review of Dean's exhibition with the Fine Art Society in 1910 emphasised the particular appeal Benares held for Dean (The Studio, London, 1910, vol 49, pp. 45-48). A view of the Bathing Ghats in Benares similar to the present watercolour was illustrated on p. 45.
