A NAPOLEAN III MANTEL CLOCK WITH AN ANIMATED DIORAMA OF A FRIGATE
The arched case cast with shells and scrolls supported by two tritons and a mythical serpent base enclosing a triangular aperture revealing a painted tole panel of a mountainous seascape, the pierced sides cast as netting, the circular movement stamped P.D. 2214 PEPIN A PARI, enclosing a miniature waterline model of a frigate with rigging, cannons, miniature figures and ivory sails. Mounted on a paper sea and attached to a mechanical system which animates the ship as if it were under sail. All mounted on a carved wooden base with plaster floral motif. The base has a reveal for a glass cover (original missing), 16 x 9 x 9in. (41.9 x 23.5 x 24.2cm.).
