ORIGINALLY NAMED THE EUROPA, THE SHIP WAS BUILT BY BLOHM & VOSS, HAMBURG AND SENT ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE ON MARCH 19, 1930. THE U.S. NAVY SEIZED HER FOR USE IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC IN 1945 AND THEN TURNED HER OVER TO FRANCE IN JUNE 1946 AS WAR REPARATION. IN DECEMBER 1946, THE LIBERTE BROKE AWAY FROM HER MOORING AND SANK AFTER RUNNING INTO THE WRECK OF THE OVERTURNED FRENCH LINER PARIS. THE MODEL REPRESENTS HER STATUS AFTER 1954, REFITTED BY THE FRENCH WITH HIGHER FUNNELS.
