Lot Essay

Charles Louis Kratke was a painter of genre scenes and portraits. A student of Jean Leon Gerome, he first exhibited at the salon of 1868. He received a third class medal in 1877 and a bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was noted for painting scenes of Napoleon on his many campaigns.
