Lot Essay

Jan Van Chelminski was a student of the Polish artist Julius Kossak. He primarily worked in Munich under the auspices of the well-known military painter Frantz Adam. He worked briefly in America, London and Munich. After travelling extensively through Europe, he settled in Paris. He is most noted as a military painter, especially executing scenes of Napoleon's Russian Campaign.
