Lot Essay

This spectacular set of panoramic papiers peints was first published by Zuber in 1830 and was designed by Jean-Julien Deltil based on Johann Moritz Rugendas's series of prints Voyage pittoresque dans le Brsil, published in Paris in 1827 and engraved by Engelmann. Deltil was evidently excited by the dramatic potential of the subject matter of this set, as in discussing it in a letter to J. Zuber dated 29 May 1829, he wrote,
' Il ne suffit plus au temps o nous sommes de reprsenter des vues de paysage et de monuments, il faut parler l' imagination, il faut de l'action, du mouvement et que tout l'intrt se porte sur les figures qui sont toujours le sujet principal...' (see O. Nouvelle-Kammerer ed., Papiers Peints Panoramiques, Paris, 1991, pp. 89-96 and p. 310, cat. 79).
