Each with tapering back centering a richly-carved interlaced foliate pierced splat above a padded drop-in seat covered in crimson velvet on straight blind fret-carved legs, each with a paper label printed HEIRLOOMS (2)

Lot Essay

The unusual ruffled surround to the interlaced back features on designs published by Robert Manwaring in his The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765, pl.7 and 33 (reproduced in E.White, ed., Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, 1990, pp.75-76).

These chairs once belonged to the noted collector George D. Widener. Other pieces formerly in his collection include examples inherited by Diana Kendall and sold in these Rooms, 14-15 October 1994, lots 517-534 and the property of a private collector, sold in these Rooms, 12-13 October 1995, lots 191, 193-195.
